Recommended Alabama Auto Insurance Coverage for Consumers
Recommended Alabama auto insurance coverage is not the same as the minimum protection required under state law. All vehicles registered in the state must have at least the following level of liability coverage in place:
- $25,000 in property damage liability coverage to pay for repairs to the other driver’s vehicle, as well as the cost to repair or replace public property such as fences, guard rails, buildings, sheds, mail boxes and sign posts
- $25,000 in bodily injury liability protection to pay for personal injury claims made by one person injured in an at-fault accident
- $50,000 in bodily injury liability insurance to pay for medical bills, rehabilitation expenses and economic losses incurred by two or more accident victims
These minimum requirements for third party liability insurance are relatively low, and the level of damages caused in a serious accident can easily meet or exceed them. The recommended level of auto insurance coverage for Alabama drivers is higher than the minimum amount required by law and is as follows:
- $100,000 in property damage liability coverage
- $100,000 in bodily injury liability protection to compensate a single accident victim
- $300,000 in bodily injury liability insurance to pay for all injuries and damages resulting from the same accident
A policy with these coverage limits means it is less likely that the driver will be responsible for paying for damages following an at-fault motor vehicle accident personally.
