Motor Insurance in the UK – The Definitive Checklist

There are a number of considerations that drivers in the United Kingdom must keep in mind before taking a vehicle on public highways. Although motor insurance is a compulsory factor, there are a number of other considerations that should be adhered to before a vehicle is used:

  • Does the vehicle owner have a valid UK license? Irrespective of whether a license is issued in a full or provisional capacity, it must be in date and used within the terms and conditions of which it was granted. Importantly, provisional drivers should never operate a motor vehicle without being accompanied by an experienced motorist
  • Does the vehicle have a valid MOT certificate? The MOT certificate provides validation that a test has been carried out within the last twelve months to ensure that the vehicle is in a solid and roadworthy condition. It is important to note that the certificate only verifies the condition of a vehicle at the time it was tested and motorists can still be prosecuted if they do not keep it to a respectable standard
  • Is the vehicle taxed? All vehicles in the UK must carry a valid road fund license which must be displayed in the main windshield. If a vehicle is being used without a valid tax disc, a current motor insurance policy can be declared null and void in the event of an accident
  • Is the vehicle adequately insured? All drivers must carry a minimum level of third party motor insurance but it is highly recommended that comprehensive cover is purchased wherever possible, especially for new or nearly-new vehicles
